Department of Forensic Medicine

Department of forensic medicine not only deals with legal aspects of medicine but also medical issues pertaining with law. Thus, helps to aid in the administration of justice. This medical department forms a link between health department, judicial department and police department. So, the police authorities and judicial authorities designate the head of the department as “THE DISTRICT POLICE SURGEON”

Department of forensic medicine of Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital deals with the expert medico-legal issues of Salem, Erode, Sankari, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Namakkal, Kallakurichi and Villupuram.

Along with administration of justice we also excel in academics with experienced faculty board consisting of Eminent Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professor, Postgraduates by conducting CME’s, regular presentations, Seminars and Guest lectures within and outside the department.

EXPERT OPINIONS

Apart from regular post-mortem examination,

  • Sexual offence examination of ACCUSED (potency and age) and VICTIM (age)
  • Expert opinions for the post-mortems done at periphery centres are being given on requisition from the magistrate and the investigating officers.
  • EXHUMATIONS and SPOT POSTMORTEMS are being done by the medical fraternities of this department.
  • Blood sample collection for BLOOD GROUPING and Rh TYPING.
  • Blood sample collection for DNA ANALYSIS by FTA cards in case of paternity disputes.
  • Opinion with regards to DRUGS and SUBSTANCE ABUSE which facilitates custody under GOONDAS act.

ACADEMICS

Classes for Medicos of second M.B.B.S and third M.B.B.S., (Regular and intermediate) are regularly conducted on two days of a week- Wednesday and Saturday. One of the two days is allotted to practical session in which students are also taken to mortuary to watch post-mortem and practical classes related to medicolegal documentations.

Regular symposiums, seminars, internal assessments and viva are being conducted to train the future doctors in medico-legal work. Students are taken to the court to get exposure of observing the evidences given by the experts.

Regular Seminar Presentations, of Postgraduates within the department, weekly Case Discussion , Journal Club Meetings and monthly Clinical Society Meeting presentation are also carried out.

EXPERT CLASSES

  1. 1. Medicolegal classes for MEDICAL OFFICERS all over the district under Tamilnadu Accident and Emergency care Initiative (TAEI).
  2. 2. Training for newly joined JUDICIAL OFFICIALS by our Faculties
  3. 3. Training classes for newly joined POLICE PERSONNEL are conducted regularly in police training institutes.

ASSIGNMENT TO STUDENTS

MBBS students are divided in to 10 groups and each group is assigned to prepare charts and models about the important topics in forensic medicine which are displayed in the department museum.

QUIZ COMPETITION

4 teams with 2 students in each team participated in the inter medical college forensic medicine quiz competition conducted by Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan medical college. Our students faired well with 1 team reached the final of the competition.

CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION (CME)

On 23th of July 2022 a CME on MEDICOLEGAL UPDATES was conducted where nearly 300 participants comprising of both undergraduates and postgraduates, Teaching faculties from various institution from all over the state, police and judicial officials.

Various topics like medicolegal documentations, examination of sexual offence cases (accused and victims), chain of custody etc. were discussed.

The CME is inaugurated by Superintendent of Police Salem District, in the presence of our Dean, Prof. Dr. Valli Sathyamoorthy. MD., DA.,

MUSEUM WORK

  1. More than 100 specimens of medico legal importance are preserved and mounted in jars with relevant labelling
  2. Enlarged photographs of forensic importance are prepared in charts and kept for students.
  3. Topics of medico legal significance enlarged and laminated for easy learning of students.
  4. Wet specimens of various types of snakes are mounted and displayed with proper label.
  5. Dummy, shot guns with cartridges, riffle weapons with bullets, commonly used weapons
  6. New pathological specimens of medicolegal importance are collected and displayed.


POSTING FOR THE CRMI

CRMI’s are posted on rotation basis for the period of 7 days from the CLINICAL postings. During the period they are instructed to assist in all the regular medicolegal works, Like post-mortem examination, sexual offence examination, age estimation and prepare the certificates for the above work.

Important topics are given as regular presentations for posted CRMI and discussed. The marks for log books are based on their involvements in cases, presentation, knowledge and learning skills,

EXHUMATION

Many Exhumations have been conducted in around Salem in the past years on the request of the concerned tahsildars.

Spot post-mortem was conducted on these cases with video graphing done throughout the procedure. Spot postmortems are done even in remote hilly areas in and around the district by our forensic faculties.

NEWLY CONSTRUCTED MORTUARY

Newly constructed mortuary as per the NMC norms with an area of400 sq.mt. The mortuary has the cold storage facility of 24 dead bodies at a time. The spacious dissection hall is well lit with the natural light.
