Blood Bank

1. INTRODUCTION

The department is situated next to casualty in the ground floor of PMSSY super specialty block, caters to transfusion requirements of GMKMCH. It is equipped to collect and process whole blood and its components like packed red cells, random platelets, fresh frozen plasma, cryoprecipitate and cryo poor plasma. We provide blood and components for more than 30,000 patients annually for both inpatients and outpatients

Working of the Department
  1. This is a department works round the clock service.
  2. Blood donor registration time- 9am - 5pm (all days except sunday)
  3. Elective tests like direct and indirect coombs test are done here
  4. Outdoor and Indoor voluntary blood donation camps are conducted throughout the year
Facilities Available

1) Whole blood collection and blood component preparation - Packed red blood cells (PRBC) Platelet concentrate (PC) Fresh frozen plasma (FFP) Cryoprecipitate

2) Donor Apheresis

3) All blood issued is screened for transfusion transmitted diseases - HIV, Hepatitis B, HCV (all by Elisa), Malaria (Card Test), Syphilis (RPR)

The objective is collecting blood through voluntary blood donation and to provide safe and quality blood and blood components collected from voluntary donors, round the clock to the needy

3. SERVICES PROVIDED:

Blood grouping and typing
Therapeutic phelebotomy
Donor screening
Coombs test

We separate all collected units into components:-
  1. Packed Red Cells (PRC)
  2. Random Donor Platelets (RDP)
  3. Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP)
  4. Cryoprecipitate
Our special services include:
  1. Aphaeresis unit
  2. Regular outreach and in-house blood collection camps
  3. Act as a Mother blood bank to Omalur GH, Karipatti UGPHC, Kannaguruchi, Kadiampatty UGPHC, ESI hospital,,, provide them with blood units on a regular basis.
  4. Counseling of blood donors and sending high risk donors and test reactive donors to ICTC for further follow up and management.

4. ACADEMIC ACTICITIES

The department offers academic training to all under graduates (MBBS), postgraduate students of pathology and students undergoing BSc (MLT), Diploma Nursing, BSc (Nursing) and DMLT Department offers training to House surgeons Blood bank training to Medical officers of PHC’S, Blood storage centres, Lab technicians and Staff nurses
