Department of Anaesthesiologists

Introduction

Anaesthesiologists are perioperative physicians who provide medical care to patients before, during, and after surgical procedures. Anaesthesiologists are responsible for delivering (or ensuring the delivery of) anaesthesia safely to patients in virtually all health care settings, including all major medical and tertiary care facilities. This includes a preoperative medical evaluation of each patient before surgery, consultation with the surgical team, creating a plan for the anaesthesia tailored to each individual patient, airway management, intraoperative life support and provision of pain control, intraoperative diagnostic stabilisation, and proper post-operative management of patients. Preparation of patients for emergency surgery are mandatory, essential, and critical skills that anaesthesiologists have been trained to employ.

Many developments have changed the life of the field of Anaesthesiology. This specialty not only has changed its appearance from a technology to a full- fledged science of Anaesthesiology, but also is almost on the threshold of branching into subspecialties.

Department Location:

The department is located on the 1st floor of the PMSSY SPECIALTY BLOCK of GMKMC Hospital. It has one administrative office, Demonstration room, Seminar Hall, library, CPCR training centre and storage room. Anaesthesiology OPD is situated on the 1st floor of the same block adjacent to the department library. Operating rooms are in various buildings of old main block, New surgical Block, RCH block, PMSSY Trauma Block, PMSSY Specialty Block.

Anaesthesia OPD:

Used for preoperative evaluation of patients on OPD basis. Here during preanaesthetic evaluation of patients on OPD basis, information regarding anaesthesia, risk involved in anaesthesia, option of anaesthesia techniques and likely complications are explained. Please do not hesitate to ask any queries. For routine planned surgeries, respective OT anaesthesiologists in wards and operating rooms again screen the patients prior to surgery.

PACU (Post Anaesthesia Care Unit):

Ten bedded intensive care unit situated in the 1st floor of PMSSY specialty block. This tries to meet the intensive care needs of the Hospital. Patients requiring intensive care therapy in the post-operative period or patients with potentially life-threatening illnesses are treated in this Unit.
