I.HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College was started in 1986. Foundation stone was laid by late Sri. Rajiv Gandhi, the Prime minister in 1987. MCI recognition was got in 1996.
Our Hospital is the tertiary care centercatering patients from the surrounding 4 districts. The THORACIC MEDICINE department functions as a separate Outpatient Department, Inpatient, Bronchoscopy suite, procedure suite and pulmonary function lab. We have pulmonology wards (10+10), Tuberculosis wards (10+10) and MDR TB wards (2+1). We see around 40,000 outpatients per year and admissions of more than 500 patients per year.
We have trained faculties for interventional pulmonology to perform Bronchoscopic procedures (Bronchial wash, BAL, Endo-bronchial toileting, Biopsy and PBBx) and Pleurocentesis, Intercostal drainage, Pleurodesis and Sonographic guided procedures. We have portable Video Bronchoscopy for bronchoscopic procedures, Spirometry and Peak flow meter for airway disease assessments. We have Special Clinics for airway diseases(Asthma and COPD) and Pulmonary Rehab. Clinic. And we are conducting National Tuberculosis Eradication Program and Pilot Project of Kasanoi Erapilla Thittam (KET) .

Two weeks clinical posting & 20 theory classes for Pre-final year MBBS Students are handled by Department faculty.

i. students are taught to examine the patients and make clinical diagnosis and to present the case.
ii. Observe procedures and PFT.
Clinical orientation program for First clinical MBBS Students for – 15 days
Post graduate MD students
15 days in 1st yr MD GENERAL MEDICINE and
1 MONTH during 2ND yr MD GENERAL MEDICINE are posted for clinical posting and clinical teaching schedule followed.
Clinical case presentation for Post Graduate MD’s – once in three weeks.
C.R.R.I:
All undergraduate students undergo training in thoracic medicine during their internship for one week. Once in a week we have group clinical discussion about interesting case .
RESPIRATORY THERAPY TECHNICIAN STUDENTS:
RTT students are attending OP and wards for their clinical Posting. And posted in IMCU, PHYSICAL MED.REHAB on rotation basis. They also given training in bronchoscope and other procedures.Theory classes are also taken by department faculties daily.
LIBRARY:
A spacious and furnished library with books and journals are available in our department.
