Introduction
Even though organized emergency medical care blossomed in the late 20th century, it has advanced profoundly since its specialty recognition in 1979 — a speciality that is a field of practice based on the knowledge & skills required for the prevention, diagnosis & management of the acute & urgent aspects of illness & injury affecting patients of all age groups, with a full spectrum of undifferentiated physical & behavioural disorders, where time is a critical factor.
Emergency physicians have increasingly become the expert acute diagnosticians, managing emergencies ranging from cardiac arrest, myocardial infarction, stroke, acute respiratory distress syndrome, road traffic accidents, polytrauma, poisoning and burns — the golden period of treatment for which ranges from a few seconds to a few minutes.
In India, it took a longer period to recognize the field of Emergency Medicine as an independent medical specialty, finally recognized by the Medical Council of India on 21 July 2009. This department was created in all Medical Colleges, including the Government Medical Colleges of Tamil Nadu, by G.O. 425, dated 22.10.2020.
Our Mission
Improving the outcomes of acutely ill and injured patients through high-quality care, and providing good training that transforms healthcare workers who can confidently and independently manage medical and surgical emergencies.
Infrastructure
Our department consists of:
- Emergency Room (ER) — for admission and immediate resuscitation
- Red Zone (RZ) — for managing patients with unstable vitals
- Yellow Zone (YZ) — for patients with relatively stable vitals
- Green Zone (GZ) — for patients who require observation
Faculties
The Department is run by one Professor & HOD, one Associate Professor, one Assistant Professor, and 10 Senior Residents / Junior Residents acting as Emergency Medical Officer–1 (looking after the ER) and Emergency Medical Officer–2 (managing RZ, YZ and GZ).
Post Graduates
3 Post Graduate seats sanctioned by the National Medical Commission from the academic year 2022–23.
