Introduction

Pharmacology is an ultimate curriculum which can help in fulfilling the practicing skills together with building up of a research foundation for the future. A strong and thorough knowledge in Pharmacology will provide the beginner to handle the clinical problems with competency and confidence.

a) Goal

  • To impart mandatory knowledge of rational drug therapeutics and necessary drug information details.
  • To inculcate versatility in psychomotor skills, including practical decision making skills, attitude and communication skills regarding use of drugs at the undergraduate level.

b) Learning Objectives

At the end of the course the students is expected to learn and acquire knowledge regarding:

  • The general principles of actions and effects of various drugs and their kinetics.
  • Dose related effects of drugs.
  • Indications, contraindications, interactions and adverse effects of therapeutically used drugs.
  • The concept of essential drugs and the importance of rational drug therapy.
  • To prescribe rationally based on the efficacy, safety and cost effectiveness for a particular disease depending on both individual and community needs.
  • To prescribe drugs in special situations such as pregnancy, lactation, infancy and old age.
  • Clinically relevant problem based knowledge.
  • Simple facts on legal aspects of drug use.
  • Computer assisted learning to acquire a better understanding of the subject.
  • Ethics, scientific procedures & social implications involved in development and introduction of new drugs, evidence based medicine, practice oriented research.
