1. INTRODUCTION
The department is situated next to casualty on the ground floor of the PMSSY Super Specialty Block, and caters to the transfusion requirements of GMKMCH. It is equipped to collect and process whole blood and its components like packed red cells, random platelets, fresh frozen plasma, cryoprecipitate, and cryo-poor plasma. We provide blood and components for more than 30,000 patients annually, for both inpatients and outpatients.
Working of the Department
- This department works round-the-clock service.
- Blood donor registration time - 9 am to 5 pm (all days except Sunday)
- Elective tests like direct and indirect Coombs test are done here
- Outdoor and indoor voluntary blood donation camps are conducted throughout the year
Facilities Available
1) Whole blood collection and blood component preparation — Packed Red Blood Cells (PRBC), Platelet Concentrate (PC), Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP), Cryoprecipitate
2) Donor Apheresis
3) All blood issued is screened for transfusion transmitted diseases — HIV, Hepatitis B, HCV (all by ELISA), Malaria (Card Test), Syphilis (RPR)

We separate all collected units into components:
- Packed Red Cells (PRC)
- Random Donor Platelets (RDP)
- Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP)
- Cryoprecipitate
Our special services include:
- Apheresis unit
- Regular outreach and in-house blood collection camps
- Acts as a Mother Blood Bank to Omalur GH, Karipatti UGPHC, Kannaguruchi, Kadiampatty UGPHC, and ESI Hospital, providing them with blood units on a regular basis.
- Counseling of blood donors, and referring high-risk donors and test-reactive donors to ICTC for further follow-up and management.
4. ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
The department offers academic training to all undergraduates (MBBS), postgraduate students of pathology, and students undergoing BSc (MLT), Diploma Nursing, BSc (Nursing), and DMLT. The department also offers training to House Surgeons, and blood bank training to Medical Officers of PHCs, blood storage centres, lab technicians, and staff nurses.
