Introduction

a) History of the Department

The Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College was started in 1986. The foundation stone was laid by late Sri. Rajiv Gandhi, the Prime Minister, in 1987. MCI recognition was received in 1996.

Our hospital is the tertiary care centre catering to patients from the surrounding 4 districts. The Department of Thoracic Medicine functions as a separate Outpatient Department, Inpatient unit, Bronchoscopy suite, procedure suite and Pulmonary Function Lab. We have Pulmonology wards (10+10), Tuberculosis wards (10+10) and MDR‑TB wards (2+1). We see around 40,000 outpatients per year, with admissions of more than 500 patients per year.

We have trained faculty for interventional pulmonology to perform bronchoscopic procedures (bronchial wash, BAL, endo-bronchial toileting, biopsy and PBBx) as well as pleurocentesis, intercostal drainage, pleurodesis and sonographic-guided procedures. We have a portable video bronchoscope for bronchoscopic procedures, and spirometry / peak flow meters for airway disease assessment. We run special clinics for airway diseases (Asthma and COPD) and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and conduct the National Tuberculosis Eradication Programme along with the Pilot Project of Kasanoi Erapilla Thittam (KET).
